The trade-offs, stated plainly
- An end-to-end encrypted transfer cannot be emailed to recipients or given a password — you share the link yourself, because the link carries the key.
- End-to-end encrypted files are not previewed or virus-scanned, because we cannot read them.
- Anyone you give a link and its password to can pass them on. Revoking is how you take it back.

No, and we would rather say so. Files are always encrypted with per-file keys we hold, which is what makes previews and virus scanning possible. End-to-end encryption is an option you switch on per transfer, and the vault uses it too.
What happens when a virus is found?
The file’s key is destroyed straight away, so it can no longer be downloaded by anyone, and the stored copy is deleted.
Can I see who downloaded my files?
Yes. You get an email when a transfer is downloaded, and each transfer shows which recipients have fetched it.
